New Thunderbird to hit the market in 2months(Twin-spark Technology)

The Chennai-based Royal Enfield has said it was developing an engine advancement similar to the digital twin spark ignition (DTSi) technology, which is at the centre of the row between Bajaj Auto and TVS.

Royal Enfield, the maker of the Bullet brand of lifestyle bikes, said an integrated engine and gear box unit is being developed, which will be based on the controversial twin-spark technology. According to sources in the automobile industry, Royal Enfield has developed a new twin spark engine for its 350cc engine that will power the new Thunderbird model, expected to hit the market in two months.

Talking to ET, Royal Enfield CEO RL Ravichandran said: "Despite being a twin-spark plug engine, our technology is totally opposite from that used by Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors. Our engines have valves, while they (Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors) predominantly use overhead cams in their engines. The twin spark plug technology is already in use for many decades and we have used it in our engine architecture to make it more efficient and make combustion easier."

Bajaj Auto had claimed that its technology has been copied by TVS Motors for its 125cc Frame bike and after a war of words in the media, it planned action only the product is marketed. TVS Motors had already asked the Appellate Board of the Patent office in Chennai to cancel Bajaj Auto’s patent on the DTSi technology. "We are not concerned with the claims made by other companies. We have adopted the technology that is ideal to make the engine modern and efficient. The patent violation is on the usage and application of the technology, which is entirely different in our case," Mr Ravichandran claimed.

Today I went and checked the new Thunderbird Twinspark...

The engine looks great, I was very curious and started the bike and engine was producing a very healthy beat and sounded highly refined.

The company is claiming 40 to 45kmpl in normal city conditions, have to see once it hit the roads.

For me the dissapointing thing was, how the engine is mounted in the Thunder bird chassis... I felt Royal enfield people were in a hury that they somehow placed the engine to the old thunderbird chassis.

In the whole bike's design, when it comes to the engine mounting, the quality & shape of foot rests, a meaning less very big silencer.. I felt the bike is not following any rules in design and not at all in sort of asthetics.. The best example I can give is check the riders footrests, the quality and fininshing of the metal rod, feels like it has just grown from the main chassis with out any perfect shape and on top of it the other side footrest is in another shape... very dissapointg job from Royal enfield when it comes to the fit and finish and quality of the vehicle.
